Alistair Overeem had de dag voor UFC 209 nog voedselvergiftiging
UFC 209 is in de boeken en Alistair Overeem kan een tweede overwinning over top heavyweight, Mark Hunt bij zijn record schrijven. De Nederlander wist in de derde ronde een (T)KO te scoren door middel van ellebogen en snoeiharde knieën.
Hoewel hij een tweede overwinning over Mark Hunt bij kan schrijven op zijn resumé, ging het gevecht bijna niet door. Alistair Overeem had volgens Dana White 24-uur in het ziekenhuis gelegen wegens voedselvergiftiging. De Nederlander is meerdere malen in het ziekenhuis geweest en kreeg zelfs meerdere infusen toegediend die door (USADA) waren goedgekeurd.
“He’s been in the hospital for 24 hours with food poisoning,” (He was) throwing up and all the other pleasantries of food poisoning for 24 hours. He was in the hospital, we brought him home, and then we had to bring him back to the hospital. They had to fill him with bags of fluids and IVs, and at one point he was afraid to leave his room because he couldn’t stop throwing up and everything else.
“He did not want to turn down the fight, still came out and fought tonight and knocked out Mark Hunt. More to his credit, didn’t say one word about it in his interview and obviously hadn’t said it here, yet. I just came in to thank him and tell him how much I respect him.”
De Nederlander heeft zichzelf met deze overwinning weer in de top van de heavyweight contenders geplaatst, en hoopt op een re-match met de winnaar van het titelgevecht tussen, Junior Dos Santos of kampioen, Stipe Miocic.
