Raphael Assuncao wil Dominick Cruz, maar Cruz denkt daar toch anders over
Raphael Assuncao behoort tot de top van de bantamweight divisie, en na zijn winst over top prospect, Aljamain Sterling afgelopen weekend vroeg hij om een gevecht met voormalig kampioen, Dominick Cruz.
Het gevecht tegen, Aljamain Sterling was een belangrijke partij voor de bantamweight divisie, en met de winst heeft, Assuncao zich weer boven aan de lijst gepositioneerd, naast voormalig bantamweight kingpin, Dominick Cruz. Het is al duidelijk geworden dat kersverse kampioen, Cody Garbrandt samen met rivaal T.J. Dillashaw het volgende seizoen van The Ultimate Fighter zullen coachen, wat dus betekend dat T.J. Dillashaw de volgende uitdager zal zijn voor de kampioen.
Volgens Raphael Assuncao (#4) is de logische keuze daarom ook een partij tegen, Dominick Cruz. De enige twee partijen waar hij mee vooruit zou kunnen komen zijn, Dominick Cruz (#1) en John Lineker (#3) waarvan de partij tegen, Cruz natuurlijk het meest interessant op ranking vlak is, maar ook finacieel vlak.
“I think Dominick Cruz would make a lot of sense right now.” He’s right there up at the top of the rankings. I don’t see any other guy.”
Dominick Cruz denkt daar heel anders over en is bereid om te wachten totdat Garbandt en Dillashaw hun ‘Grudge-match’ hebben uitgevochten. De voormalige bantamweight kampioen geeft aan alleen tegen de beste atleten te willen vechten en ziet Raphael Assuncao daar niet tussen staan.
“It’s not a question of if I’ll fight him,” Cruz said. “I fight the best in the world. I’m ready to fight for the belt. That’s what I’m in line for. That’s who I’m here to fight – the best. That would be the next guy who thinks they’re the champion, and I can take the belt from him. That’s not Assuncao, and I’m not the guy for him. … I’m fighting for the title when I come back, and that’s the end of it.”
Wat er daadwerkelijk gaat gebeuren is vooralsnog niet duidelijk, maar een partij tussen Dominick Cruz en Raphael Assuncao als ‘contender-fight’ lijkt misschien wel de logische optie om die tijd van The Ultimate Fighter te overbruggen.
